The artist has donated the full amount of his £25,000 award prize money to the MVT, which functions to protect the Britain's grassroots music venues.

The star was given the prize on 16 October as his latest record the album was chosen as the outstanding release of the past year.

He has decided to hand the money over to the trust, in acknowledgment of the crucial part local spots fulfilled in his beginning days.

"As an artist wouldn't be doing this success if it hadn't been for all the performances I performed around the area, and further afield, when I was just getting going," stated Sam Fender. "These locations are iconic, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these venues have permanently closed – about one-sixth of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, top acts including Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the trust in its efforts to support the industry, by including a modest fee to their ticket costs, which benefits local stages.

Fender also joined in, collecting over £100k on his recent tour to support numerous local spots across the UK.

The money helped venues that were dealing with imminent closure due to issues arising from floods, blazes and bereavements, as well as regulatory hurdles, court cases and noise complaints.

Other venues were granted monetary aid in modernizing infrastructure and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted musicians and fans.

"The concept that money from shows in big venues supports the local stages, where it all starts for artists like me, is just logical," the star has stated.

Fender is among several artists to donate his Mercury Prize winnings to worthy causes.

Back when Pulp received the trophy in 1996 for their record Different Class, lead singer Jarvis Cocker announced that the group would give their prize money to the organization War Child.

That year, artist she shared her bounty among several charities, such as the children's charity and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"Additionally, I contributed a thousand pounds to the center, to their gymnastics class, because I did gymnastics when I was a child and they needed updated gear," she shared with the media.

Previously, Ezra Collective contributed their prize money to the community center that nurtured their act, as well as other local music groups.

And 1994 winners the group donated their winnings to a MS organization after a close contact was identified with the illness.

"Winning was quite enough," said vocalist Heather Small. "The prize was the bonus but we didn't require the extra, because we had the honor. So our winning touched another person's life."

In the past week, the Music Venues Trust revealed it had rescued two grassroots venues in the South East, by placing them under local control.

The first in the city and The Croft in the city were acquired under the community ownership scheme, which is supported by the arts council and enthusiasts who acquire "stakes" in the properties.
