Red Cross Assists Militant Group in Recovery for Bodies of Israeli Hostages in Gaza

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) confirmed that its personnel joined Hamas officials into areas of the Gaza Strip still under Israeli military authority to facilitate the hunt for the remains of Israeli hostages.

Ceasefire Terms and Hostage Bodies Handover

Under the US-brokered ceasefire, which began on October 10, the group is obligated to return the remains of all Israeli hostages as soon as possible. As a reciprocal measure, Israel has consented to transfer 15 Palestinian bodies for every Israeli body returned.

Yet, the effort to locate the remains has proved challenging from the beginning, given the presence of an estimated enormous amount of rubble across the strip, where, as per health officials, at least ten thousand Palestinians are recorded as unaccounted for, trapped under the debris.

Diverging Claims on Body Whereabouts

Hamas has claimed it lacks information on the precise whereabouts of all the bodies, saying it has been unable to communicate with a number of its units that had been holding the hostages and were reportedly eliminated during military strikes.
