Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users buying these drugs need to be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
People who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is higher among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
